Hi Mike,

I just have a very simple question but it really confused me for long.

Why do we say that the power of signals is equal to the square of the amplitude (magnitude)?

Hi Jinwen. The terminology can indeed get confusing. The term “power” is used in signal processing. The “magnitude” of a complex number is its distance away from the origin of the complex plane. That’s also the same thing as “amplitude” in the signal processing literature.

I don’t really have a good answer to your question, except that terminological imprecision is something we just need to get used to.
